Spring is in the air and it is almost time for high school kids to be let out classes. I’m sure more than a few of them will be traveling Europe this summer. Taking a summer off and backpacking in Europe is almost a right of passage for many of today’s youth. To experience one last summer of freedom before college and summer jobs take over is every teenager’s dream. The extra freedom from the parents doesn’t diminish their enthusiasm. While it is difficult to tour all of Europe in a two-month summer break there are some countries that are visited by young travelers more than others.

Backpacking Sweden isn’t usually on younger backpacker lists. For one it as seen as even more expensive than the rest of Europe and it is a bit out of the way. The weather doesn’t necessarily appeal to those looking for beaches and skimpy bikinis. There are far more popular destinations that many of these kids have only heard about and not experienced as of yet. As any 18 year old where they want to go in Europe and undoubtedly their answer will be Greece, Spain or possibly the UK. These countries have activities or events that draw the younger crowd.

Greece is home to many beautiful beaches and the Greek Islands are a popular destination. There are islands that are popular because they have the reputation to be the ultimate party scene. With the drop of the euro and tourism in Greece this season, backpackers will find it kinder to their pocketbooks than previous years. The popularity of Spain is similar to Greece with sandy beaches with topless bathers appealing to young men. The UK also lures young backpackers, especially London, as aspiring musicians come to check out their favorite bands’ haunts and bars where they got their start. Wherever you are in Europe this summer you are sure to see multitudes of young travelers testing their limits and enjoying their freedom.
